GROWER NOTES: >
Vaccinium corymbosum 'Duke' is commonly referred to as Duke Highbush Blueberry or Blueberry 'Duke'. It is an upright, deciduous shrub with dark green leaves that turn showy orange and red in fall. It blooms late in the season so late spring frosts usually miss their mark on this selection. Waxy, bell-shaped white flowers in spring are followed by medium to large, firm blue blueberries in early summer. The blueberries are sweet and are enjoyed by both humans and wildlife. Blueberries are self-fertile, but do benefit from cross-pollination which provides a better, heavier harvest.
Duke Highbush Blueberry thrives in full sun in rich, fertile, acidic, evenly moist, well-drained soils. Prune as needed in late winter in the third year after planting for a better harvest. Ideal as a companion plant for Rhododendrons and Azaleas as all enjoy rich acidic soils.
