Ilex verticillata 'Southern Gentlemen' is commonly referred to as Southern Gentlemen Winterberry Holly. This fast growing, extremely hardy male selection has a dense, upright rounded habit with rich green leaves that turn purplish-bronze in fall. It does not set fruit, however, it is an excellent pollenizer for late-flowering varieties of winterberries. One male plant can easily pollinate five female plants.
Southern Gentlemen Winterberry Holly enjoys full to filtered sun in rich, organic, evenly moist, well-drained soils. It can tolerate wet or swampy areas and can be pruned to shape in early spring just before new growth appears.
