GROWER NOTES:

Quercus muehlenbergii is commonly known as the Chinkapin Oak. This Ohio native, deciduous tree typically grows 40-60' tall with an open globular crown.

It is native to central and eastern North America and found on dry upland sites in rocky, alkaline, limestone soils. Its narrow, green leaves somewhat resemble the leaves of the chestnut whose nut is sometimes called a chinquapin, hence the common name of this oak.

Fall brings yellow foliage and small acorns that mature in one season with think, bowl-shaped warty caps. These acorns are known as the sweetest of Ohio's oaks. The Chinkapin Oak's bark is light gray when immature and turns dark gray, forming ridges and blocks with deep furrows when mature. Bark flakes off easily when rubbed.
