GROWER NOTES: >
The American Sycamore is generally regarded to be the most massive tree indigenous to eastern North America. This enormous deciduous tree is usually single-trucked and can grow to over 75-100 feet in its long lifetime. It has horizontal branching and a rounded habit. Sycamore trees are native to lowland areas and grow best along streams, rivers and flood plains. The Sycamore is noteworthy for its brown bark which exfoliates randomly to reveal attractive creamy white mottled inner bark. Foliage is large and dark green with coarse marginal teeth. In fall the foliage turns yellowish-brown.
Platanus occidentalis is considered too large to city environments. It is best used by streams and rivers where it will thrive along the waterways.
