Variable leaf lobes are cut deeply, and some of them curve erratically. A vase-shaped habit with strong, vertical main branches and numerous small branchlets add to the desirability of this tree.

The Bloodgood's growth habit is upright with strong branches forming a broad-topped tree with a spread about equal to the height.  The origins of this beautiful tree are a bit fuzzy, but it appears to be cultivated in the US since well before WWII.  Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood' is a true classic in every sense of the word.

Leaves are dissected almost to the petiole. The red leaf color is best as the new leaves emerge in the spring and in the fall. Leaves turn almost green during the heat of the summer. Be sure to clear all turf away from beneath the branches of these low growing types so the lawn mower will not damage the tree. This compact cultivar makes a wonderful accent for any landscape.

Beautiful yellow-leaved form of the species, known as the 'golden full moon maple', is a most spectacular tree and highly prized.  Spring brings bright yellow foliage.  As the season progresses, the leaves gradually turn yellow green to medium green.  In partial shade, the foliage retains the yellow tones a little longer than in bright sun.  Direct sun will cause some leaf scorch in hot climates, but this cultivar can tolerate full sun better than most yellow forms.  The fall colors vary from orange to red and all shades in between, and occasionally blending with purple!
