There seem to be hundreds of new perennials coming out every year, so many that it's hard to know which 'band wagon' to jump on.  Some new varieties (Coreopsis "Limerock Ruby' comes to mind) seem to be produced in such a hurry that the plant isn't trialed enough before being propagated and marketed to an eagerly awaiting public.  Responsible hybridizers are, however, producing high quality new varieties that are much better than the old standbys.  Increased vigor, bloom time, and exciting new colors are being introduced every year.  These new varieties are marketed in many trade and consumer magazines, so the demand is going to be there as soon as the plants become available.  Some new varieties that we are having good success with at Acorn Farms include the following:

These varieties were bred to have attractive foliage, and increased quantities of blooms.  I have noticed in our production area that these plants produce many more flowering eyes than the older varieties of Astilbes.  The plants in this series also have compact growth habits, which makes them much tidier plants in the pot and in the garden.

Astilbe 'Boogie Woogie' PPAF

Bright, fluorescent pink blooms and dark green foliage.  Grows 14-16" high.  Such an excellent plant and one of my favorites.

Astilbe 'Country & Western' PP14969

Dark green foliage sports full, fluffy, salmon-pink blooms.  Grows 16-20" high.

Astilbe 'Rhythm & Blues' PP14933

Bright pink blooms over dark green foliage.  Grows a bit larger at 22-26" high.

Astilbe 'Rock & Roll' PP14855

For clean, white flowers, this one is hard to beat.  Bronze foliage contrasts well with the blooms.  20-24" high.

The Vision Series - from the original 'Visions', three more varieties were produced that have the same drought tolerance, compact habits, and sturdy, upright stems.

Astilbe 'Vision in Pink' PP11860

Dark green foliage, with thick, upright stems of pale pink plumes.

Astilbe 'Vision in Red' PP11965

This has a more compact habit with bronze-green foliage, and upright , reddish flower stems.  The reddish flower buds open to purple flowers.
Grows 15-18" tall.

Astilbe 'Visions in White' PP18965

New for us last year, this variety has compact, dark green foliage, and sturdy stems holding the pure white flowers. Grows 15-18" high.

These are shorter delphiniums that have finely cut leaves, and loose panicles of blooms that are produced for a long time in the summer.  Can be short-lived, but will occasionally self-seed.  Zone 3.

Delphinium gra. 'Summer Cloud'

Deep blue flowers with white centers on a mound of finely cut foliage.  Grows about 12" high.  Starts blooming early summer and is heat tolerant.

These will give you something to drool about, with their colorful, patterned flowers and long bloom times.  They have a bit more of an open growth habit compared to the Star series of Dianthus.  Dead head to encourage rebloom.  Zone 5.

An amazing amount of hybridizing has been going on with Echinaceas in the past few years.  It seems every year, there are more new varieties coming out.  We are growing many of these new varieties at Acorn Farms, and most have worked pretty well for us.  And, most of them are a big improvement over older varieties.

The Big Sky™ Series was developed by Richard Saul of ItSaul Plants, these new varieties exhibit more compact growth habits, and good branching. The flowers have wider petals than the species, and are available in a much wider range of colors.

Echinacea 'Harvest Moon' PP17652

Fragrant, bright gold flowers with an orange-gold central cone.  Branches well, and is a vigorous grower.  Grows 24-30" high.
Zone 4.

Echinacea 'Summer Sky'

Zone 4.

Echinacea 'Sundown' PP17659

Fragrant, orange-red blooms have overlapping petals and large, brown cones.  Strong stems and good branching.  Grows 32-40" high.  Zone 4.

Echinacea 'Sunrise' PP16235

Pale yellow, lightly scented flowers with cones that start out green, and then turn gold.  A vigorous grower with excellent branching.  Grows 30-36" high.
Zone 4.

Echinacea 'All that Jazz' PPAF

Introduced by Walter's Gardens, this one has unusual, lavender-pink, quilled petals, and lots of them.  Blooms for a long time.  It has a stocky habit, and has strong stems that don't flop.  Grows 30-36" high.  Zone 4.

Echinacea 'Merlot' PP18814

Large, fragrant, rose-pink flowers on strong, dark purple stems.  The flowers contrast well with the dark stems, plus they don't flop over.  Grows 30-36" high.  Zone 4.

Echinacea 'Pixie Meadowbrite' PP18546

An excellent dwarf variety that absolutely stays short, this one produces a multitude of pink blooms from mid to late summer.  Grows 18-24" high, with a nicely branched, spreading habit.
Zone 4.

Echinacea 'Tiki Torch' PP18839

Eye-catching, pumpkin-orange blooms make this one a valuable addition to any garden.  The flower color last a long time.  Blooms from mid to late summer, and grows 24-26" high.  Zone 4.

Another plant that has seen extensive hybridizing, many of the new Heucheras have been bred with H villosa, which gives them great tolerance for summer heat and humidity.  there are many new, non-fading colors in Heucheras, from chartreuse to peach, to almost black.  All are a big improvement over 'Palace Purple', and other older varieties.  Some of the new varieties, in addition to having attractive foliage, also rebloom.

Heuchera 'Caramel' PP16560

A vigorous grower, with matte yellow-orange leaves with purple undersides, this is a great improvement over H. 'Amber Waves'.  Creamy white flowers.  Grows about 15" high.  Zone 4

Heuchera 'Citronelle' PP17934

Bright, yellow-to-chartreuse leaves, depending on the amount of light.  It is a sport from 'Caramel', so it has the same vigorous growth habit.  Grows about 12" high, with creamy white blooms.
Zone 4.

Heuchera 'Hollywood' PP17129

Metallic, purple leaves and loads of coral-red blooms all summer tell me that this one is going to be a real winner.  An upgrade from 'Cherries Jubilee', which doesn't bloom as long.  Grows about 10" high.

Heuchera 'Marmalade' PP15945

A real standout, with its shiny, ruffled foliage that ranges in color from amber to orange, to deep rose.  Performs well in sun or shade.  Grows 10" high.
Zone 4.

Heuchera 'Obsidian' PP14836

Glossy, purple-black leaves form a tight mound about 10" high.  An excellent grower that tolerates heat and humidity, and doesn't fade.  Small, creamy white blooms.

Heuchera 'Paris' PP18881

Silver-veiled, green leaves, and non-stop rose-red blooms all summer long, this one just cannot be beat.  The flowers are very showy, even into the fall.  Grows 10" high. Zone 4.

A new series of Asiatic and Oriental lilies that were bred to stay short, and yet have high bud counts, and thus more blooms.  They come in a wide variety of colors, and are great for forcing, as well as for planting in the landscape.  Most of them naturally grow 12-14" high, no growth regulators required.  We grow several different crops of Lily Look lilies, so we have them blooming at different times.  Hardy lilies are great for providing color in the landscape. They naturally bloom early summer, just before daylilies bloom.  We grow about a dozen varieties of Lily Looks:

Lilium 'Tiny Bee'

 -- deep yellow

Lilium 'Tiny Ghost'

-- deep reddish purple

Lilium 'Tiny Hope'

-- red

Lilium 'Tiny Icon'

-- bright pink

Lilium 'Tiny Nanny'

 -- pure white

Lilium 'Tiny Puppet'

-- dark red

Lilium 'Tiny Sensation'

-- yellow with heavy maroon speckling

Lilium 'Skyline'

-- bright, two-tone orange

Lilium 'Tiny Todd'

-- soft pink with white center

Lilium 'After Eight'

Like a miniature 'Stargazer', fragrant, deep pink flowers.

Lilium 'Sunny Bonaire'

Fragrant, light pink, upwardly facing flowers, grows 18" high.
